Vaccine Education Center Annual Symposium

This symposium is intended for specialists in primary care, secondary specialty care, physicians-in-training, allied health and public health professionals, nurses and other healthcare professionals working in the field of immunizations. Vaccines are an important public health tool. However, increasingly healthcare providers must spend time defending their continued use, communicating their safety, and adjusting practice operations according to a complex schedule in an ever more stretched financial climate. The symposium will examine vaccines as they relate to these issues. Speakers include Dr. Walt Orenstein of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Paul Offit of CHOP, Dr. Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania, and Alison Singer of the Autism Science Foundation. Following up on the success of Rockland County's 2009 Symposium; educators, professionals and parents who work with children on the autism spectrum are anxiously awaiting the 2010 Autism Symposium . Rockland County will be hosting an array of nationally renowned speakers that will present informative and interesting topics on Autism for the 2010 agenda. This year, Dr. Paul Offit, Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, will be serving as the keynote speaker. In addition Dr Peter Gerhardt, Executive Director of the Nassau Sufflok Services for Autism; Dr Andres Martin, Psychiatry Director of Medical Studies at the Yale Child Study Center and Eustacia Cutler, author and mother of autism advocate Templer Gradin, will be joining Dr. Offit as guests speakers throughout the day. AHA 20th Annual Fall Conference

This year's Asperger Syndrome and High Funtioning Autism Association's annual fall conference will focus on issues in education for school age children on the autism spectrum. AHA's mission is to increase awareness and knowledge of higher functioning autism among the professionals who diagnose, treat, educate or provide services; as well as attain appropriate educational programs, effective social skills training, increased social and recreational opportunities, meaningful employment, and sufficient and satisfactory independent living accommodations for those with high functioning autism. Alison Singer, co-founder and president of the Autim Sciecne Foundation, will be featured as the keynote speaker. She will be discussing "whats hot and whats not in the science of autism" on the morning of Monday, October 25, 2010. Other speakers throughout the fall conference will include Dr. Brenda Smith discussing simple strategies that work in school atmospheres, Dr. Lynda Geller speaking about demystifying agression, and Dr. Valerie Gaus sharing ways to keep stress under control for children on the autism spectrum. Fore Autism

TPC Potomac at Avenel

On a beautiful August morning, the Autism Science Foundation held its signature fundraising golf event, “Fore Autism", at the incredibly gorgeous TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, in Potomac, Maryland; and successfully raised over $75,000. This course is part of the PGA Tour network and was absolutely spectacular to play on. Local celebrities joined in on the fun, including retired Redskins running back Brian Mitchell, and CNBC Power Lunch anchor Bill Griffeth. The day began at 10am with breakfast and putting practice, followed by a noon tee time with over 100 golfers anxious to get on the course. Guests took part in exciting activities throughout the day including a "hole in one" contest for a car, and a "longest drive" contest. After 18 holes of golf, guests enjoyed cocktails while watching a putting contest and enjoying handmade cigars on the golf clubs terrace. Cocktail hour was followed by a beautifully catered gala dinner, with dinner speaker Dr. Tom Insel, Director of the NIMH. Guests took part in a silent auction throughout the evening with great sports packages and vacation packages, making our first annual Fore Autism Golf Tournament an incredible success. May 21, 2010: Autism Science Foundation held a special edition of its signature “Science and Sandwiches” lunchtime event at IMFAR (the International Meeting for Autism Research) in Philadelphia. Over 100 attendees heard from six of ASF's pre-doctoral grantees about their latest research. Science and Sandwiches brings parents, researchers and other stakeholders together to share ideas, talk science and, of course, eat sandwiches. Click here to view photos
May 9, 2010: The Autism Science Foundation and the JCC of Mid-Westchester held “Celebrating Families: Mother's Day Brunch” to honor moms raising children with special needs. The day was full of great fun, great food and great families and raised over $30,000 for autism research and education. Click here to view photos.
April 10, 2010: Banding Together for Autism was held on Saturday April 10. Guests were treated to outstanding music from The Instant Classic and Rubix Kube, while raising critical funds for autism research. The event was sponsored by the Autism Science Foundation's Young Professionals Committee and hosted by Stefanie Skinner of BravoTV's hit show "Kell on Earth". View photos
